Darcy pulled her scarf up and hunched her shoulders high. She felt stupid already and it was only four minutes after nine, but she’d known all along Jack wouldn’t come.
She wiped the bright red lipstick from her lips, and gingerly stepped across the ice back toward the school entrance. The note could have been from anyone. They were probably there right now laughing at her misery.
“Just don’t fall” Darcy whispered desperately to herself.
But she had already fallen – in the worst possible way. She had fallen for the coolest boy in school and it left her cold.

Poor Darcy! Who hasn’t fallen for the coolest boy or girl in their youth and suffered the consequences?

Cool guys (and gals) often do that.

Such a cruel tale, familiar from all school playgrounds. I hope she grows stronger from the experience.

Live and learn, Darcy. Sometimes the coolest are also the cruelest.

Dear Anna,
Kids can be so mean. I felt for Darcy. One day she’ll show them all. 😉 Good one.

The coolest ones are the coolest for a reason, for at that age, not giving a damn is the most heroic trait of all, especially among boys 😦

Being ‘stood up’ as we used to call it… no more painful experience.

You tell that story very well indeed, Anna. Lots of good detail supporting an emotionally coherent plot. Great work!

Thanks … 100 words is quite tough to present anything in full 🙂 That’s the fun of it though I guess 🙂

Sometimes you need an experience like this to get a better handle on human nature. No one wants the hard lessons though.🤔.
I’m afraid a lot of girls want the coolest guy— and guys the cutest chicks—- because they will look good, in the eyes of their peers, standing next to him/ her. In teen years it’s often all about self-esteem.

You’re so right .. self-esteem plays a huge part in teenage decisions about love!
Yet, often the self-esteem is already lacking by the teen years 🙁

Perhaps because I, too, have experienced that “worst possible fall,” my heart sank as I murmured, “Aww…” at the end of your sweet, sad little story. Very nicely done!
